Netflix Expands Spanish Film Slate With Cesc Gay's Drama 53 Domingos

SPANISH director Cesc Gay’s 53 Domingos will be produced and released by Netflix. For the unversed, it is an adaptation of his award-winning theater play.

The dramedy revolves around three brothers who meet to debate what to do with their octogenarian father whose behavior has suddenly become weird. Amidst discussions on whether to transfer him to a nursing home or invite him to stay with one of them, what begins as a civil family gathering quickly turns into a chaotic and tumultuous brawl.

The film features Carmen Machi (Piggy), Javier Cámara (Talk to Her) and Javier Gutierrez (Prison 77).

Gay is popular the world over for his 2015 breakout Truman, which features Ricardo Darín and Javier Cámara. His other works include Stories Not to Be Told (2022), En la ciudad (2003), and Nico and Dani (2000).

53 Domingos is one of three features Netflix dropped this week for its new Spanish originals lineup. The lineup also includes political thriller Un Fantasma en la Batalla from Agustín Díaz Yanes and the investigative drama La Desconocida. Un Fantasma en la Batalla has been produced by Society of Snow filmmaker JA Bayona. La Desconocida has been written by journalist and author Rosa Montero.

Un Fantasma en la Batalla revolves around the lives and experiences of several members of Spain‘s Guardia Civil who battled Basque terrorist group ETA in the 1990s and 2000s. La Desconocida delves deeper into the industry of human trafficking.
