TOHO, the powerhouse Japanese entertainment company, is all set to support the directors Yoko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita’s latest venture, Ghost Cat Anzu, taking charge of its release in Japan and commemorating the event with a fresh teaser. Gkids has already secured the rights for the film’s North American release, while Charades continues its international sales efforts, a report in Variety revealed.

This family-oriented project, merging Japan’s Shin-Ei Animation and France’s Miyu Productions, follows the spirited friendship between 11-year-old Karin, a determined girl sent to live with her monk grandfather in rural Japan, and Anzu, the enigmatic phantom cat who becomes her guardian.

Adapted from Takashi Imashiro’s manga, the animated feature will showcase the voice talents of Mirai Moriyama as the phantom feline and Noa Goto as his young companion. The film is set to debut in Japanese theaters in July, with a North American premiere to follow.

Director Nobuhiro Yamashita, renowned for his critically acclaimed works and contributions to Midnight Diner, employed a technique where live actors were filmed and then transformed into animated characters under the supervision of emerging talent Yoko Kuno. This approach maintains the original charm of the characters.

Toho, a leading figure in production and distribution, had a stellar year with the success of Godzilla Minus One, which grossed over $55 million in the United States, becoming one of the highest-grossing foreign films in recent memory. Additionally, Toho’s distribution arm handled the North American release of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and The Heron, which amassed over $45 million at the box office for Gkids.
