FRENCH actor Gérard Depardieu finds himself embroiled in yet another accusation of sexual assault, amplifying the reverberations of the #MeToo movement within French cinema. According to lawyer Carine Durrieu Diebolt, a 53-year-old movie decorator alleges that Depardieu groped her during the 2021 filming of Les Volets verts, or The Green Shutters.

The decorator claims that Depardieu forcefully grabbed and touched her waist, stomach, and breasts, prompting intervention from others on set. Depardieu’s legal representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

These latest allegations surface in the wake of French actor Judith Godrèche’s impassioned plea during the Cesar Awards ceremony, where she urged the film industry to confront sexual violence and abuse. Godrèche, herself a survivor, criticized the industry’s silence on these issues and called for accountability.

Depardieu, who has faced accusations from multiple women in the past, including preliminary rape and sexual assault charges in 2020, maintains his innocence. However, his denial and subsequent support from French authorities have sparked controversy and led to further scrutiny of the entertainment industry’s culture.

President Emmanuel Macron initially praised Depardieu’s contributions to French cinema but later emphasized the importance of supporting abuse victims. French cultural minister Rachida Dati echoed these sentiments, calling for introspection within the film industry and an end to impunity.

As Depardieu’s legal battles continue and the conversation surrounding sexual misconduct persists, French cinema finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with its complicity in perpetuating a culture of silence and impunity.
