Virdee: Staz Nair Replaces Sacha Dhawan In BBC’s New Crime Thriller Series
Staz Nair replaces Sacha Dhawan.

STAZ Nair is set to take over the lead role in the BBC crime drama Virdee, replacing Sacha Dhawan, as reported by Deadline. Dhawan, known for his role in Doctor Who, had to step down due to scheduling conflicts. Nair, recognized from Game of Thrones and Supergirl, will now portray Harry Virdee in the Bradford-set series.

The cast for the adaptation of AA Dhand’s thriller has been unveiled, featuring Aysha Kala as Saima Virdee, Harry’s wife, Nina Singh as Tara Virdee, Harry’s niece and a dedicated crime reporter, and Vikash Bhai as Riaz Hyatt, Harry’s brother-in-law. Kulvinder Ghir and Sudha Bhuchar will play Harry’s parents, Ranjit and Jyoti. Other cast members include Elizabeth Berrington, Danyal Ismail, and Tomi May.

Renowned composer Hans Zimmer has been confirmed to create the theme music for Virdee.

The series, which premiered at the Edinburgh TV Festival alongside works by Sally Wainwright and Nicole Lecky, follows Harry Virdee, an investigator ostracized by his Sikh family for marrying a Muslim. As he grapples with personal struggles and a serial killer targeting the Asian community, Harry seeks reconciliation with his family.

Nair expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s an absolute honor to be taking on this vibrant and complex story.” Dhawan, while stepping down, wished the team the best.

Nair’s recent roles include Tarak in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon and Qhono in Game of Thrones. He also appeared in Supergirl and the pilot episode of We Are Lady Parts.

Produced by the Magical Society’s UK division and helmed by director Mark Tonderai, the series is adapted by Dhand and executive produced by Paul Trijbits, Dhand, and Jo McClellan. Cineflix Rights serves as the exclusive worldwide distributor.

The score for Virdee will be a collaboration between Zimmer, James Everingham, and Shashwat Sachdev, providing opportunities for trainees from Bleeding Fingers and Screen Academy Bradford to gain experience in screen composition.
