THE shoot for the latest season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has begun in Toronto, Ontario, and marked the eagerly awaited beginning of its third season journey. This exciting update was unveiled via an Instagram post by Runa Ewok, the canine companion of Christina Chong, a star of the series.

Chong, known for her portrayal of La’an Noonien-Singh, the security chief aboard the USS Enterprise, posted a snapshot of Runa within the iconic ready room set, and signaled the beginning of filming activities.

Strange New Worlds had scheduled its post-strike production window spanning from December 2023 to June 2024. Given the series’ dependence on intricate special effects and extensive post-production work, it’s unlikely that fans will see its return within this year.

However, fans of the Star Trek universe can expect the imminent arrival of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery. Notably, Strange New Worlds originated from Discovery following a well-received cameo by Anson Mount and fellow Enterprise crew members Spock (Ethan Peck) and Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) during its second season. Discovery’s farewell journey is set to commence on April 4, with Strange New Worlds slated for a likely airing in 2025.

In Season 2 of Strange New Worlds, viewers witnessed the resolution of Season 1’s gripping finale, wherein Una faced Federation arrest for concealing her genetic enhancements.

The season had shown Pike’s successful legal battle to secure Una’s freedom and reinstatement. Throughout its episodes, the show embarked on various adventures, including a temporal journey to 21st-century Toronto, a crossover event with the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the groundbreaking inclusion of the franchise’s inaugural musical episode. The season culminated in a harrowing cliffhanger, as the Enterprise found itself under siege by the hostile Gorn aliens, and Pike’s beloved Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) faced a dire fate after being implanted with a Gorn embryo. This cliffhanger paid homage to the iconic suspense of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “The Best of Both Worlds.” Unfortunately, fans will have to endure an extended wait to discover the outcome of these dramatic events.

Runa herself made an appearance in the series, portraying the pet of Princess Thalia (also played by Chong) in the first-season episode titled The Elysian Kingdom, where the Enterprise crew was transformed into characters from a storybook by a mysterious cosmic entity. Star Trek has a rich history of featuring animals on-screen, from Data’s cat Spot in The Next Generation to Captain Archer’s faithful beagle Porthos in Enterprise.

While the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently in production, an official release date has yet to be announced. For future updates, stay tuned to Collider, and don’t miss Collider’s interviews with Chong and her co-stars Celia Rose Gooding and Melissa Navia.
