Oscars 2025: Academy Announces Major Changes For 97th Edition; All You Need To Know
Oscars 2025 will be held on March 2 next year.

THE Oscars, Hollywood’s renowned film awards, are undergoing significant updates for their 97th edition scheduled for March 2 next year, courtesy of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In an effort to support traditional cinemas, the Academy has refined the criteria for film eligibility.

The films must screen for at least one week in specific metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Atlanta, and a new addition, Dallas-Fort Worth. Additionally, films must meet expanded theatrical standards in various US markets and international territories, a report by Variety revealed.

A noteworthy development is the merging of the animated feature and international feature categories. Animated films submitted by foreign countries can now vie for consideration in both categories, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

Composers stand to benefit from the alterations as well. The best original score category will now feature a shortlist of 20 titles instead of 15, and up to three composers can receive individual statuettes for their contributions to a score.

In the realm of writing, those seeking Oscars recognition must now furnish a final shooting script, potentially affecting films with substantial improvisation.

Special awards presented during the Governors Awards ceremony are also undergoing changes. The Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award will transition from a bust to an Oscar statuette, while the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award’s focus has shifted to commend humanitarian endeavors promoting human welfare and addressing inequities.

Moreover, two awards at the Scientific and Technical Awards have been renamed to better acknowledge technological contributions. Key submission deadlines have been communicated, underscoring the importance of punctual submissions across various categories, including animated short films, documentary features, and international feature films.

The Academy has also updated regulations governing promotional campaigns, delineating guidelines for promoting Oscars-eligible motion pictures and performances to its members.

These modifications underscore the Academy’s dedication to evolving alongside the film industry while upholding the Oscars’ integrity and prestige. As anticipation builds for the 97th Oscars, Hollywood is poised for a ceremony that promises to celebrate excellence and innovation in filmmaking.
