HOLLYWOOD sensation Anne Hathaway, who is currently busy with the promotions of her upcoming release The Idea Of You which she has also produced, recently reflected on a past audition experience. Recalling a time when she was asked to kiss 10 individuals to “test for chemistry,” Hathaway expressed her discomfort with the process, labeling it as “gross.”

In a recent interview with V magazine, Hathaway recounted how, in the early 2000s, such practices were commonplace in the industry but now recognized as deeply flawed.

Sharing her unease during the audition, Hathaway revealed her inner conflict, feeling pressured to comply while internally questioning the appropriateness of the request. “I was told, we have ten guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them? And I thought, Is there something wrong with me? because I wasn’t excited,” the Princess Diaries star said in the interview.

Despite her reservations, she felt compelled to feign enthusiasm, fearing the repercussions of being labeled as difficult. Reflecting on the experience, she acknowledged it as a product of its time, devoid of malice yet indicative of a lack of awareness.

As a seasoned actor and producer, Hathaway recognized that genuine chemistry could be cultivated through alternative means. Rather than subjecting actors to uncomfortable physical interactions, she and her team devised a more respectful approach.

During auditions for her projects, prospective actors were asked to select a song that resonated with their character, followed by a brief improvisation session. This allowed Hathaway to gauge compatibility in a more organic and mutually respectful manner, devoid of the discomfort and coercion of past practices.
