AS the flurry of winter award shows — the Emmys, the Golden Globes, the Grammys — subsides, the granddaddy of them all, the Academy Awards, is on the horizon. The 96th Oscars could be a crowning moment for Oppenheimer, leading the pack with 13 nominations, although other contenders like Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Poor Things are also in contention.

Take a look at what you must know about this year’s Oscars:

WHEN & WHERE TO WATCH THE OSCARS?

The Oscars are scheduled for Sunday, March 10th, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony will commence at 7 p.m. EDT — an hour earlier than usual — and will be broadcast live on ABC, with a pre-show starting at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Don’t forget to adjust your clocks accordingly, as it’s also the first day of daylight saving time in the U.S.

WHICH STARS WILL BE PRESENTING AT THE OSCARS?

Last year’s big acting winners will return as presenters, including Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Additionally, Scarface co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino are set to present awards. The lineup also includes Zendaya, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Lange, Nicolas Cage, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell, and Lupita Nyong’o, with more names expected to be announced closer to the show date.

WILL THE CEREMONY BE STREAMING FOR VIEWERS?

The ceremony will be available for streaming on ABC.com and the ABC app with a cable subscription, as well as on platforms such as Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV. The streaming partner in India is yet to be announced. Last year, the show streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.

WHO WILL BE HOSTING THE OSCARS?

Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the ceremony for the fourth time, joining the ranks of four-time hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon, with only Johnny Carson (five), Billy Crystal (nine), and Bob Hope (eleven) ahead of him. I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times, said Kimmel.

ANY FAVORITES AT THE OSCARS 2024?

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leads the pack, with Nolan also being a frontrunner for best director. The best actress category might see a showdown between Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Emma Stone (Poor Things). Notably, if Gladstone wins, she would be the first Native American to receive an Oscar. In the best actor category, contenders include Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), both vying for their first Oscar wins. Da’Vine Joy Randolph (co-starring with Giamatti) is a favorite for best-supporting actress, while Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) is expected to win best-supporting actor, with Ryan Gosling (Barbie) as his closest competition.

The ten nominees for best picture include: American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

BARBIES BEING SNUBBED AT THE OSCARS 2024

Barbie, the biggest box-office hit of 2023, received eight nominations, sparking discussions about the snubs it faced. Notable omissions include Greta Gerwig for directing and Margot Robbie for best actress. The nominations for Barbie include best-adapted screenplay, best supporting actress for America Ferrera, and two best song nominations.

ANY CHANGES INCORPORATED AT THE OSCARS?

While recent Oscars have been marred by incidents like envelope snafus and controversies over live presentations, this year’s show is relatively unchanged (aside from the earlier start time). All awards will be broadcast live, with honorary prizes presented separately during the untelevised Governors Awards. The academy has introduced a new award for best casting, but it won’t be presented until the 2026 Oscars.

Composer John Williams received his record 49th best-score Oscar nomination for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, marking his 54th overall nomination. Additionally, Godzilla earned its first Oscar nomination, with Godzilla Minus One nominated for best visual effects. For the first time, two non-English language films, The Zone of Interest (German) and Anatomy of a Fall (French), are nominated for best picture.
