MARVEL Cinematic Universe faces another setback as director Destin Cretton steps down from the helm of the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Cretton had been associated with the project since the previous year, and the news of his departure comes in the aftermath of San Diego Comic-Con, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Jeff Loveness, known for his work on the Kang-focused film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, had already drafted a version of the movie. However, it remains uncertain whether another writer will be brought in, especially with the recent conclusion of the writer’s strike.

Despite relinquishing the directorial duties for Kang Dynasty, Cretton will maintain his ties with the MCU. Currently, he is involved in producing the Wonder Man TV series and working on a sequel to his previous directorial venture, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to sources, Cretton is in discussions with Marvel regarding additional projects.

The MCU has been grappling with challenges, including box office disappointments, negative reviews, and a growing sense of disconnection from the audience. The Marvels stands out as one of the franchise’s significant flops, and with projects like Blade undergoing revamps, Cretton’s departure raises concerns about the future.

Actor Jonathan Majors is slated to portray the antagonist Kang, a time-travelling scientist with advanced weaponry and intellect. Kang, one of Marvel’s formidable foes, has various iterations across the multiverse.

However, Majors’ legal issues add uncertainty to the project. Kang made his debut in the season one finale of Loki, and he also serves as the antagonist in Quantumania. The film’s conclusion hinted at a Council of Kangs, featuring numerous versions played by Majors. Yet, his ongoing legal matters cast doubt on his future involvement with Marvel as he faces trial in New York on assault and harassment charges.
