A trial date has been set for Alec Baldwin in connection with the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of the Western movie Rust. A New Mexico judge issued a scheduling order on Monday, with jury selection slated to commence on July 9 and the trial beginning the next day. Special prosecutors and Baldwin’s defense team are expected to deliver opening statements, with the proceedings anticipated to last eight days.

Baldwin, who served as the lead actor and co-producer of the film, entered a plea of not guilty in January, shortly before his scheduled arraignment. This followed his indictment by a grand jury, prompted by a reevaluation of the revolver involved in the incident. The gun discharged while Baldwin was handling it during a rehearsal, resulting in the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injury to director Joel Souza.

While Baldwin maintains that he did not pull the trigger, subsequent analysis suggests otherwise, indicating that sufficient force was applied to release the weapon’s fully cocked hammer. The revolver is also a focal point in the trial of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the weapons supervisor facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering.

The outcome of Gutierrez-Reed’s trial holds significant implications for Baldwin, who could face up to 18 months in prison if convicted. Pending trial, Baldwin is subject to certain conditions, including abstaining from firearms and alcohol, and refraining from leaving the country. Additionally, he is restricted from contacting members of the Rust cast or crew for the purpose of promoting the film or any related projects.
