ONE of the most-awaited sequels in Bollywood, fans of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Don franchise have been waiting for a third installment in the blockbuster series for years now. Ending the wait, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar on Tuesday officially announced Don 3.
Taking to his Instagram account, Farhan shared a special video in which the logo of 3 can be seen, with the iconic theme music of Don playing in the background. Further, it had a tagline “A new era begins.”
As soon as the video was posted by Farhan, fans started speculating whether Ranveer Singh has replaced Shah Rukh Khan in the Don franchise. Fans are not too happy with the rumors and flooded the comments section of Farhan’s post to express their displeasure.
“I dont think so any other actor can match the swag of SRK in Don….#nosrknodon3,” wrote one user. “So finally you guys are ruining one more franchise race 3 ka kya haal huva tha pta nhi hai app logo ko Don kai role mai srk kai alwa aur koi nhi ho sakta,” read another comment.
For the unversed, it has been in the news for long that the reins of the iconic Don franchise will be taken over by Ranveer from Shah Rukh. Director Farhan has been toying in the idea for a long time but was waiting for just the right time to make the news official.
It was reported that Farhan and Ranveer already shot for a special announcement teaser months ago, but refrained from making it official. Why make the announcement now?
Perhaps Ranveer’s recent box office success with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has made him a bankable star yet again after a slew of debacles with Cirkus, Jayeshbhai Jordaar and 83. While Ranveer seems to be eyeing redemption at the box office with a blockbuster franchise such as Don in his kitty, Shah Rukh fans aren’t too happy with the impending announcement. The film gave the actor a chance to act in his most favorite genre-action movies, but it also came with a lot of box office pressure.
Shah Rukh did take up action movies (Pathaan, Jawaan and Pathaan vs Tiger), the actor reportedly turned down Don 3 as he was not fully convinced with the script.
According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, “It’s not like Shah Rukh Khan didn’t like the script. It’s just that Shah Rukh was not fully convinced. He knows Don is an iconic role and would like to step back into the character once he’s completely confident of the script. The box office scenario is not very healthy and he wants to be doubly sure before signing on the dotted line.”
At the time of its release, Don 2 (2011) became a global box office success and went on to collect over Rs 200 crore. It also collected 5 of the top awards at Filmfare, including Best Film, Best Director (Farhan) and Best Actor (Shah Rukh).
Shah Rukh in and as Don was nothing short of iconic. While he rarely took on negative roles in his career, Don shattered many stereotypes associated with the superstar. His long braided hair and ponytails gave his quintessential romantic hero image a break and left the audiences swooning for more.
It doesn’t come as a surprise that Ranveer stepping into Shah Rukh’s shoes isn’t an ideal situation for fans of SRK and the franchise. But one look at Ranveer’s filmography proves that the actor can turn into any character like a chameleon.
An official teaser with Ranveer Singh as the new Don in Don 3 will reportedly be released this week and will also be attached to Sunny Deol’s film Gadar 2 in theaters.
