FORMER Bollywood star Zaira Wasim, who is an active social media user, took to her Twitter account to defend a picture of a woman trying to eat while wearing a niqab. The Dangal star wrote about how she ate the same way while attending an event recently and said that it was “purely her choice.”

Zaira Wasim was reacting to a picture posted by a social media user of a woman eating with her niqab on. The caption read, “Is this a choice of a human being?” Reacting to this, the former actor wrote, “Just attended a wedding. Ate exactly like this. Purely my choice. Even when everyone around me kept nagging me that I take the niqab off. I didn’t. We don’t do it for you. Deal with it.”

Several fans of Zaira Wasim took to the comments section of her post to react to her comments. One user wrote, “May Allah give you more power and dignity to follow your religion. Ameen.” Another comment read, “As long as the matter is of personal choice and preference, no one possesses the right to criticize unless the choice is informed by external pressure. If she’s fine eating like this, who the hell are you to criticize?”

This is not the first time Zaira Wasim has reacted to a debate about hijabs and niqab. Last year, the former actor voiced her opinion about the Karnataka Hijab ban row and wrote, “Stacking this bias against Muslim women and setting up systems where they should have to decide between education and hijab or to give up either is an absolute injustice. You’re attempting to compel them to make a very specific choice that feeds your agenda and then criticising them while they’re imprisoned in what you’ve constructed.”

Zaira Wasim acted in several popular Bollywood films including Dangal, Secret Superstar and The Sky Is Pink. She announced her retirement from acting in 2019 and said that her acting career conflicted with her religious beliefs and faith.
