Bollywood actor Richa Chadha, who is currently in France to attend the Cannes Film Festival 2023, reacted to the ongoing ‘social media chatter’ about the much-talked about red carpet fashion. The actor called it a ‘gear venue of marketing’ and asked netizens to ‘let them be’.

Taking to her Instagram story, Richa Chadha wrote, “There’s a lot of chatter on social media about Cannes, Fashion, film etc. Just wanna say, don’t s**t on anyone please. People are excited to be here, I notice the ones that are thanking brands/designers/ alcohol labels that are bringing their influencers here. It’s a gear venue for marketing no? Let them be.”

She further added, “You will notice most people say they’re at the red carpet but won’t specify the film. Well, they’re not here with a film or for a film. Having said that, should you be so lucky to get to work on a film that ends up at Cannes… it’s the best feeling in the world. It’s after all a FILM FESTIVAL, no matter what anyone says. And as an artist, there’s no greater joy and contentment than a 7 min long standing ovation.”

Richa Chadha’s social media story comes just days after filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri slammed actors and social media influencers for causing the ‘death’ of the film festival.

“So sad to see the death of Cannes Film Festival. Most of these are not even actors or have any film showing at Cannes. Films are replaced with fashion. Actors with SM influencers. Film Journalism with… you know what… And FILMMAKERS… who cares about them? Om Shanti!” wrote Vivek Agnihotri in his tweet.

Filmmaker Nandita Das penned a long note to take a dig at how celebrities only attend Cannes Film Festival for the red carpet. “Sadly missing Cannes this year. Sometimes people seem to forget that it is a festival of films and not of clothes!” read an excerpt from the caption of her Instagram post.

The 76th Cannes Film Festival began on May 16 and will conclude on May 27.
